trials and tribulations of taking care of your skin while traveling

hiya, happy february! i’m heading home for the next two weeks and couldn’t be more excited.

one of my new years resolutions was to be more mindful about how i’m treating my skin in all aspects of skincare – from how aggressively i wash it, to what type of toxins i’m encountering day to day, to how much water i’m drinking in order to keep hydrated. i’ve always been a notorious face holder, rester, grabber, toucher the list goes on…. and it’s been a REALLY hard habit to kick. i find myself (especially at work) touching some part of my neck or face when i’m scrolling through a patient’s chart – gross. needless to say it’s been a tough resolution for me, but a necessary one. and it’s been really fun delving into the complex world of skincare. one of the biggest topics, much to my surprise, was how to take care of your skin while flying. some of these will be new for me [which i’ll be sure to note] but some i’ve already been doing for years. regardless, here is how i take care of myself while traveling.

1. hydrate. this one isn’t new for me, or that complicated. there’s just something about being hydrated that makes your skin that much better. i keep my hydro flask close and full for a solid 48 hours – starting 24 hours before said travel day and finishing the next day. i love the hydro flask because they’re large and they keep things cold for days! when i get sick of plain water, i’ll add some lemon or cucumber to spice it up a bit.  i’ll also add one packet of emergen-c into my bag to have mid flight – can’t be getting sick on vacation!

2. i’ve been using the ole henriksen power peel mask for little bit now and have fallen in love. i’ve been trying to use it bi-monthly and i make sure to plan my mask the night i arrive at my final destination. to be honest, i’m not sure if i should be using it before or after traveling, but it just feels that much better after a long day in the car or in the air. am i doing this wrong?

3. another tried and true product i’ve been using for some time is the caudalie beauty elixir. it’s the best little pick-me-up and hydrator before you take off, halfway through, or when you make it to the final destination. it’s TSA compatible and the scent is in no way overwhelming. unless you’re my older sister, tiffany, and spray half the bottle in one sitting and then you’re bound to get some seriously interesting looks.

4. the other day i was doing my binge reading of into the gloss and stumbled upon this article where they talk about wearing a physical sunscreen before taking off.  i was blown away. i mean, it makes total sense. a physical sunscreen literally goes on top of everything you’re wearing [i believe… beauty gurus, help a sister out] and the article talks about how the physical barrier is combating all those nasty airplane germs.  so i figured i had to give it a shot. i mean, what did i have to lose? one thing that they recommend is this product – which, judging by the reviews looks seriously amazing. i will be making a trip to sephora in denver for it. and i’ll give you an skin update when i get back to burlington.

for now, that’s all i have up my sleeve. what kind of beauty tricks do you have when you fly??

happy february!

new serum, new skin.

happy hump day, folks.

it’s a doozy over here today. i’m just tryin’ to get through the day without smothering someone (or snapping, bitching, yelling…  you get the point.) it’s just one of those days.

in other unrelated and much more positive news, i’ve found something fabulous. something great and new and state of the art. okay, i guess not exactly state of the art, it’s really quite simple – yet still fabulous.

here’s the behind the scenes version:

i’ve got some of the most particular, sensitive, annoying skin there is. i’m being overly critical (as almost everyone is about themselves) but it’s sensitive. i’ve been fighting acne [and now adult acne] for pretty much my whole life. it’s not terrible, but it’s annoying in the fact that when i get zits, they’re big and painful and the under the skin type. they’re also the type that leave dark marks and discoloration. so i’ve tried all sorts of regimens, and i’ve pretty much nailed down the face wash/lotion combo but i needed something to help with the discoloration.

thank you, google search! i found a lovely little article written by elle magazine entitled, ’18 best products for treating acne scars’ BOOM. it has a great selection of products ranging from overnight masks, to UV lights, to a daily cleanser. the products range in price from $5 each to $299, so there is literally a product for everyone’s budget.

i chose two separate ones, both available from amazon and BOTH for less than $50. i didn’t want to break the bank on new products when i wasn’t sure if they were going to work for me, so i was quite thrilled when i saw the price tags.

1. insta natural vitamin c skin clearing serum  – this is one of amazon’s top sellers in the ‘facial salicylic acid’ departments. there are over 3000 reviews and with an average rating of 4.3 you know it’s gotta be good. i’ve been using the serum twice daily for about a month. the bottle always says you need more than you do so i’ve found 2-3 drops is plenty for my face and neck. i put it on right after i wash my face and use my toner before sunscreen. it’s great in that it doesn’t feel heavy or sticky at all and it’s quick drying; great for my 6:20 departure mornings.

2. derma e overnight peel  – i’m, honestly, still a bit new to the overnight peel regimen so i haven’t quite mastered the cocktail. i’ve been using it twice a week [per the bottle directions] and i think i could amp it up by a day per week. again, the bottle says apply a generous layer, but literally less than half a pump each use is plenty. it leaves my skin with a slight tingling feeling which i kind of love because i think it’s sucking my wrinkles out.

what i love about both products [besides the price, obviously] is that neither have made me break out. and coming from a girl with sensitive skin, nothing is more annoying than trying something new, and getting a face full o’ zits from it.

wishing you all a glorious wednesday and hoping your day is now infinitely better. and your face! i promise it will be!!
