three worthy things

coming at you from the comfort of my parent’s house in denver where it’s cold, snowy and i have a full cup of coffee –  i’m certainly not moving anywhere quickly.

last week i wrote about the trouble of taking care of your skin while flying. one of the biggest takeaways was the importance of a physical sunscreen. i mentioned wanting to try this specific product – and well, sephora was one of my first stops on this trip. the cream is supposed to help smooth out any sort of redness, acne and/or blemishes. it also brags about protecting against UV light and environmental pollution.

i’ve used it every day this week and i’m obsessed. to be honest, i’ve always been self conscious of my skin – i’ve used multiple products to even out my hyper-pigmentation or new blemish [yes, i’m 28 and still get acne. eye roll.] but with the addition of this product, i can honestly eliminate most of the others i had been using. it smooths out my skin without looking fake and makes my morning routine much easier. one thing i’m still learning is the appropriate amount of moisturizer to put on before – my skin is adjusting to the dry climate in denver and it needs a bit more lovin’.

head to sephora and get yourself some of this. ask for a sample which they will happily give you or if you’re ready to jump aboard it comes in two different sizes. let me know your thoughts!

i’ve found some really amazing prints and artwork as of recently. i’m looking for some new artwork for my living room – haven’t figured out what one [or ones] will be the winners. votes?

last and final “thing” this week is going to be some of the amazing people i’ve had the opportunity to spend time with this week. grateful for the relationships i have with all of them. ❤ IMG_2364.jpg

trials and tribulations of taking care of your skin while traveling

hiya, happy february! i’m heading home for the next two weeks and couldn’t be more excited.

one of my new years resolutions was to be more mindful about how i’m treating my skin in all aspects of skincare – from how aggressively i wash it, to what type of toxins i’m encountering day to day, to how much water i’m drinking in order to keep hydrated. i’ve always been a notorious face holder, rester, grabber, toucher the list goes on…. and it’s been a REALLY hard habit to kick. i find myself (especially at work) touching some part of my neck or face when i’m scrolling through a patient’s chart – gross. needless to say it’s been a tough resolution for me, but a necessary one. and it’s been really fun delving into the complex world of skincare. one of the biggest topics, much to my surprise, was how to take care of your skin while flying. some of these will be new for me [which i’ll be sure to note] but some i’ve already been doing for years. regardless, here is how i take care of myself while traveling.

1. hydrate. this one isn’t new for me, or that complicated. there’s just something about being hydrated that makes your skin that much better. i keep my hydro flask close and full for a solid 48 hours – starting 24 hours before said travel day and finishing the next day. i love the hydro flask because they’re large and they keep things cold for days! when i get sick of plain water, i’ll add some lemon or cucumber to spice it up a bit.  i’ll also add one packet of emergen-c into my bag to have mid flight – can’t be getting sick on vacation!

2. i’ve been using the ole henriksen power peel mask for little bit now and have fallen in love. i’ve been trying to use it bi-monthly and i make sure to plan my mask the night i arrive at my final destination. to be honest, i’m not sure if i should be using it before or after traveling, but it just feels that much better after a long day in the car or in the air. am i doing this wrong?

3. another tried and true product i’ve been using for some time is the caudalie beauty elixir. it’s the best little pick-me-up and hydrator before you take off, halfway through, or when you make it to the final destination. it’s TSA compatible and the scent is in no way overwhelming. unless you’re my older sister, tiffany, and spray half the bottle in one sitting and then you’re bound to get some seriously interesting looks.

4. the other day i was doing my binge reading of into the gloss and stumbled upon this article where they talk about wearing a physical sunscreen before taking off.  i was blown away. i mean, it makes total sense. a physical sunscreen literally goes on top of everything you’re wearing [i believe… beauty gurus, help a sister out] and the article talks about how the physical barrier is combating all those nasty airplane germs.  so i figured i had to give it a shot. i mean, what did i have to lose? one thing that they recommend is this product – which, judging by the reviews looks seriously amazing. i will be making a trip to sephora in denver for it. and i’ll give you an skin update when i get back to burlington.

for now, that’s all i have up my sleeve. what kind of beauty tricks do you have when you fly??

happy february!

nyc recap

whoaaaaa, it’s been a minute since i’ve been here! i sincerely apologize for that. between taking part of a research study that gave me a full body rash and days of fevers of 102 (i think i had the plague), finishing my previous job and starting a new one i’ve been a bit distracted. oh, and we’re also house hunting. it’s been hectic here! but…. i’m back. and here to tell you all about our trip to NYC easter weekend.

tiffany and i first went to the city together two years ago in november. we were there right before the holidays and told each other we’d go back every year. this time, we decided a last minute adventure was exactly what we needed. we ate and drank our way through the city; walked miles every day and did lots of people watching – what better way to spend the time??

where we ate:

jack’s wife freda // one of the best breakfast places i’ve been to. rosemary waffles and a very unusual egg combo [but seriously, whoever decided to make eggs and serve it with greek yogurt, naan flatbread and a tomato cucumber salad… thank you]

the meatball shop has a bunch of different locations and i’d be surprised if they all weren’t thriving. we were repeat customers and definitely weren’t let down. if i lived in the nyc area, i’d get delivery from there at least once a week. although, thankfully, my wallet and waistline are better off….

again, we decided to eat at seamore’s for the second time visiting the city. it’s definitely the place to try a new kind of fish – just check out the back wall to see them all!

between eating at goa taco and tacombi i could die now. tacombi had great margs and guacamole to snack on while waiting for your tacos. their serving sizes are smaller in size but not in taste. goa taco was more eclectic in their tacos by using a paratha as a taco shell but HOLY MOLY are they good. i honestly think their slow roasted pork belly is a top three taco i’ve ever had. in my life. fullsizeoutput_14b3

where we drank:

anfora was a convenient 10 minute walk from our hotel. we started the night there with a couple really good cocktails and, if you know me, you won’t be surprised when i say that we couldn’t turn down the burrata. we sat at the bar and had excellent service. the embience is perfect for a fun date night.

eataly on fifth ave is one of the most overwhelming places EVER. if you’re a basket case in crowds, consider yourself warned. we meandered through and sat at one of the bars to have a couple glasses of wine. the people watching was insane! i could eat a quarter of their cheese selection and be full for a year. IMG_0306

where we shopped:

follain is a clean beauty store started in boston and, also, where i’ve been ordering most of my skincare and makeup from.  i REALLY wanted to make a trip to the store to see it firsthand. the packaging of the products they sell is an indicator of how beautiful the store is… it was amazing. i was like a kid in a candy store – definitely a place to check out!

m.gemi is known for their beautifully crafted italian shoes. i’ve been stalking them on the internet for quite some time, so it was awesome to check out a store to try a pair on. when i say they feel like butter on your feet, i mean the softest, most churned butter you can find.

bandier is a totally chic workout store – expensive and chic. it’s super fun to check it out every time we’re there, who knew workout clothes had such style?!

i’ve been lusting over a janessa leone hat for some time now and really wanted to try one on while we were there. instead, i feel in love with one from goorin bros – a lovely happy medium as janessa leone hats are easily $250. i didn’t really take it off the rest of the weekendIMG_0286

where we slept:

the jane hotel in the west village is perfectly located for all of our needs. it was the second time we stayed there and we opted for the bunk bed room again. because we don’t spend lots of time in the room, it works for us. shared (but very clean) bathroom down the hall and just enough room for us and our bags. word to the wise – they have a very popular club on the first floor of the hotel. if you are a light sleeper, i would avoid the jane hotel. fullsizeoutput_149d

where we explored:

described as “a revitalized piece of new york city’s past” the high line was one of my favorite places to see. it’s an old rail road track that has been converted to a walking path that has amazing architecture and plants. again, super crowded on a sunday morning, but would be a great spot for some people watching while drinking a cup of coffee.

i’ve been following paintbox on instagram for some time and it was only fitting that we check it out ourselves. they are known for their awesome nail art. we sipped some champagne and relaxed in style while getting a totally glam mani.fullsizeoutput_14b6

what’re your favorite things to do when you’re in the city??

p.s. thought you should know that i wore my red wing boots ALL over the city without even having to “break them in” and they were AMAZINGGGGG. literally cannot say enough great things about them. i highly recommend them.
