life in the fast lane

well hello again.

it’s been a little over 4 months since i’ve been here. over the course of those 4 months i’ve had a lot of time to self reflect – to focus on me and my physical, mental, and emotional well being. and, shit, it got real. i stripped down all these barriers [that i never knew i had] until i felt defenseless, vulnerable and naked. it wasn’t fun, nor easy. i’m not finished and, realistically, won’t ever be – self reflection and care is an ever evolving process that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

BUT let’s be real, it’s much easier to avoid those nagging little voices and jitters that can easily consume your entire day than face them head on. it’s easier to sweep things under the rug and forget about them. but when there’s no space under the rug, those forgotten “things” magically appear again while trying to hide the new things and it SUCKS. it can be a vicious cycle. it can consume your body, mind and entire being.

i’ve learned that during those times where you can’t quite get a freaking grip, you can rely on your people. find your people and stick to them like glue.

they’ll be there for you when it’s literally the most inconvenient time for them. if you want them to shut up and listen, they’ll do it. if you want them to give you advice, they’ll do it. and if you want to go to the bar and get drunk, they’ll do that too.

THANK YOU to my people. these past couple of months i’ve learned that life isn’t always that much better in the fast lane. and i wouldn’t have learned that without them.

three worthy things

coming at you from the comfort of my parent’s house in denver where it’s cold, snowy and i have a full cup of coffee –  i’m certainly not moving anywhere quickly.

last week i wrote about the trouble of taking care of your skin while flying. one of the biggest takeaways was the importance of a physical sunscreen. i mentioned wanting to try this specific product – and well, sephora was one of my first stops on this trip. the cream is supposed to help smooth out any sort of redness, acne and/or blemishes. it also brags about protecting against UV light and environmental pollution.

i’ve used it every day this week and i’m obsessed. to be honest, i’ve always been self conscious of my skin – i’ve used multiple products to even out my hyper-pigmentation or new blemish [yes, i’m 28 and still get acne. eye roll.] but with the addition of this product, i can honestly eliminate most of the others i had been using. it smooths out my skin without looking fake and makes my morning routine much easier. one thing i’m still learning is the appropriate amount of moisturizer to put on before – my skin is adjusting to the dry climate in denver and it needs a bit more lovin’.

head to sephora and get yourself some of this. ask for a sample which they will happily give you or if you’re ready to jump aboard it comes in two different sizes. let me know your thoughts!

i’ve found some really amazing prints and artwork as of recently. i’m looking for some new artwork for my living room – haven’t figured out what one [or ones] will be the winners. votes?

last and final “thing” this week is going to be some of the amazing people i’ve had the opportunity to spend time with this week. grateful for the relationships i have with all of them. ❤ IMG_2364.jpg

trials and tribulations of taking care of your skin while traveling

hiya, happy february! i’m heading home for the next two weeks and couldn’t be more excited.

one of my new years resolutions was to be more mindful about how i’m treating my skin in all aspects of skincare – from how aggressively i wash it, to what type of toxins i’m encountering day to day, to how much water i’m drinking in order to keep hydrated. i’ve always been a notorious face holder, rester, grabber, toucher the list goes on…. and it’s been a REALLY hard habit to kick. i find myself (especially at work) touching some part of my neck or face when i’m scrolling through a patient’s chart – gross. needless to say it’s been a tough resolution for me, but a necessary one. and it’s been really fun delving into the complex world of skincare. one of the biggest topics, much to my surprise, was how to take care of your skin while flying. some of these will be new for me [which i’ll be sure to note] but some i’ve already been doing for years. regardless, here is how i take care of myself while traveling.

1. hydrate. this one isn’t new for me, or that complicated. there’s just something about being hydrated that makes your skin that much better. i keep my hydro flask close and full for a solid 48 hours – starting 24 hours before said travel day and finishing the next day. i love the hydro flask because they’re large and they keep things cold for days! when i get sick of plain water, i’ll add some lemon or cucumber to spice it up a bit.  i’ll also add one packet of emergen-c into my bag to have mid flight – can’t be getting sick on vacation!

2. i’ve been using the ole henriksen power peel mask for little bit now and have fallen in love. i’ve been trying to use it bi-monthly and i make sure to plan my mask the night i arrive at my final destination. to be honest, i’m not sure if i should be using it before or after traveling, but it just feels that much better after a long day in the car or in the air. am i doing this wrong?

3. another tried and true product i’ve been using for some time is the caudalie beauty elixir. it’s the best little pick-me-up and hydrator before you take off, halfway through, or when you make it to the final destination. it’s TSA compatible and the scent is in no way overwhelming. unless you’re my older sister, tiffany, and spray half the bottle in one sitting and then you’re bound to get some seriously interesting looks.

4. the other day i was doing my binge reading of into the gloss and stumbled upon this article where they talk about wearing a physical sunscreen before taking off.  i was blown away. i mean, it makes total sense. a physical sunscreen literally goes on top of everything you’re wearing [i believe… beauty gurus, help a sister out] and the article talks about how the physical barrier is combating all those nasty airplane germs.  so i figured i had to give it a shot. i mean, what did i have to lose? one thing that they recommend is this product – which, judging by the reviews looks seriously amazing. i will be making a trip to sephora in denver for it. and i’ll give you an skin update when i get back to burlington.

for now, that’s all i have up my sleeve. what kind of beauty tricks do you have when you fly??

happy february!

three worthy things

happy sunday, everyone! definitely another weekend for the books! dinner with great friends, a day of skiing and adventures in stowe. unfortunately for me, it’s my monday and i’m back to work tonight. i’ll be obsessing over this week’s ‘three worthy things’ all night.

last time tiffany and i went to new york city we decided to splurge and see what the hype about paintbox nails was. i’ve followed their instagram account for some time and have nail envy over every single design. they’re known as a “high-design nail studio” that will give you an immaculate mani while you’re sipping champagne. whether you want a plain color or full design, you’ll walk out and want to wave your fingers in front of everyone else to oogle. i wish i lived closer to the city because i would totally have to frequent this place – only after i won the lottery though.IMG_1858.JPG

okay, so recently i’ve been obsessed with trader joe’s. i’ve found the best time to go is either after 8pm or before 10am and i avoid the weekends if i don’t want to gauge my eyes out with the parking lot and the people inside. [i know, i sound like a total brat, but you ALL know what i’m talking about…] i’ve also found that it’s especially helpful to do a bit of googling to find the absolute best products that i shouldn’t be forgetting because it’s quite easy to get lost once inside. surprisingly, this product has never come up during my searches. so, i’m gifting the product to you all. i like to have a package or two of this in the freezer for nights i don’t want to cook, which, let’s be honest, is quite frequent. there’s more than one serving so i usually end up eating the leftovers for lunch the next day! add a salad and some bread, obviously a bottle of wine and you’ve got yourself a meal. you’re welcome.

-unfortunately, i can’t find the direct link on the trader joe’s website, so this is all i can give you-Screen Shot 2017-12-07 at 8.21.38 PM

mari andrew, is a writer and illustrator living in new york who i can’t help but adore. i follow her on instagram and love when i stumble on her illustrations – they’re upbeat and put a smile on my face – especially when most of what i see these days is negative and usually real depressing. apparently she’s coming out with a book this spring which would be the cutest coffee table book to flip through. here are a few of my favorite pics.

next week is christmas! can’t believe it’s almost here – i better finish up some last minute shopping, wrapping and [CLEANING] before my parents arrive! 😀

happy sunday!
